                                                           News Release
A sustainable approach to energy policy is one of the keys to preserving our quality of life. Climate change and energy security are closely linked. The challenge of preventing climate change from spiraling requires a paradigm shift in the way we produce and use energy over the coming decades.

The challenge for policy makers is how to make this happen. In the true spirit of sustainable development, leaders in the developed and developing worlds alike need to consider this transition in a broader environmental and developmental perspective.

This event offered the opportunity to hear from high level officials about alternative forms of energy and practices that aim to control the impact of increasing energy consumption in Eurasia, home to the greatest portion of the global population and the highest economic growth.

 The panel featured:

    * Ms. Maria Francesca Spatolisano, First Counselor, Economic & Financial Affairs, European Commission Delegation to the UN
    * Ms. Bai Yongjie, Counselor and Alternative Representative, Permanent Mission of People’s Republic of China to the UN
    * Ms. Dewi Wahab, Counselor of Economic Affairs, Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the UN
    * Mr. Alexandre Bulatov, Senior Investment Officer, Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in the USA

  European Union News Updates:
EU, US and the global financial crisis

US President Barack Obama called (March 11) for a two-pronged G20 effort to fix the global economy including both stimulus and regulatory reforms, aiming to heal a rift with Europe.

"The first is to make sure that there is concerted action around the globe to jump-start the economy. The second goal is to make sure that we are moving forward on a regulatory reform agenda that ensures that we don't see these kinds of systemic risks and the potential for this kind of crisis again in the future."

The comments came amid a rift between US and European leaders over the G20, with Washington pressing for more spending plans and most European leaders urging increased global regulation to prevent too much risk-taking in the global financial system.
